Senior ANPR Engineer

About the role

DVSA is looking for a Senior ANPR Engineer to lead the design, delivery and support of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and Weigh‑in‑Motion (WIMS) systems across the UK. The role sits within the Roadside Infrastructure and Systems Service and reports to senior enforcement stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Define and implement technical roadside infrastructure solutions that align with DVSA’s enforcement strategy.
• Act as the subject‑matter expert for end‑to‑end ANPR and WIMS services, ensuring high availability and performance.
• Lead the planning, installation and commissioning of new ANPR and WIMS sites nationwide.
• Collaborate with the Enforcement Service Manager and project teams to integrate ANPR capabilities with overall service objectives.
• Maintain accurate ANPR asset records and Configuration Management Database (CMDB) in line with Highways England regulations.
• Provide proactive and reactive support for the live ANPR service, troubleshooting and resolving issues.
• Train and mentor DVSA and DS&T colleagues on ANPR technologies and future developments.
• Ensure all activities comply with DVSA policies and processes.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in ANPR and roadside enforcement technologies.
• Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and represent the agency at industry events.
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
