Job description

About the role

Archangel Lightworks, a laser communications company building wireless technology, is seeking a Senior Electronics Engineer to lead the design, integration and testing of complex subsystems within its Optical Communications Terminal. The role is hands-on and collaborative, working closely with software, mechanical and optical teams so that systems are integration-ready and fully verified for Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT). The office is in Osney Mead, Oxford, with possible home-working and periodic business travel.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the electronics function and own electrical and electronic subsystems end-to-end: requirements definition, architectural design and trade studies, component selection, procurement and supplier coordination, assembly and verification, and maintenance of power budgets, interface control documents and system artifacts.
  • Integrate hardware and software at board and subsystem level, implement and debug communication protocols such as CAN, SPI, UART and I2C, and coordinate with embedded software and firmware teams.
  • Support PCB production, documentation and sign-offs, design and maintain system harnessing, and work with production partners and testing teams.
  • Delegate work, review and mentor colleagues.
  • Take part in formal test campaigns, design electrical test equipment and ensure subsystem readiness for full AIT.

Required profile

  • 5+ years in electronics development with end-to-end ownership of complex electronic subsystems, delivering to schedule, cost and quality.
  • University degree or similar, with a strong background in electronics design theory.
  • Demonstrated experience in electrical hardware-software development, including schematic design, PCB layout and testing, component libraries, EMC compliance and microcontroller programming and debugging.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers.

Required skills

  • Electrical design tools and PCB tools such as KiCad or Altium.
  • Simulation tools such as SPICE.
  • Harness design tools such as RapidHarness.
  • Version control such as GitHub.
  • Desirable: high-speed electronics design, System-on-Chip design (e.g. Xilinx), space/aerospace or high-reliability exposure (ECSS), tooling and process leadership (DOORS/Jama/SysML), and CI for hardware/firmware.

What we offer

  • Work on advanced optical systems in a fast-paced, supportive start-up backed by the UK Space Agency, DSIT and the Ministry of Defence.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package with equity options.
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, regular socials and weekly company lunch.
  • Professional development and a collaborative, transparent culture.
