Senior Estates Technician / Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical)

About the role

Our client, one of the UK’s largest NHS Trusts, is seeking a Senior Estates Technician with an electrical or mechanical bias to join a static, multi‑skill engineering team in Chelmsford and Southend. You will help keep critical hospital services running 24/7 across a complex healthcare environment.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on electrical and mechanical plant, including generators, boilers and ventilation systems.
• Diagnose and resolve complex faults in lighting, power, fire alarm, medical gas and water services.
• Respond to emergencies such as power failures, fire alarm activations and lift entrapments.
• Monitor and adjust Building Management Systems (BMS) as required.
• Complete maintenance records, risk assessments and permit‑to‑work documentation.
• Liaise with contractors, hospital departments and clinical teams to coordinate work.
• Mentor junior technicians and apprentices and participate in the on‑call rota.

Required profile

• Completed apprenticeship in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (City & Guilds 18th Edition for electrical bias).
• ONC, HNC or equivalent technical qualification in a relevant discipline.
• Significant experience maintaining complex building services in a critical environment (healthcare, industrial or commercial).
• Strong knowledge of health & safety legislation, risk assessment and safe systems of work.
• Ability to read technical drawings, schematics and manufacturers’ information.
