Senior Gardener

About the role

The University of Oxford Parks is looking for an experienced horticultural professional to lead projects and mentor the next generation of green‑space specialists. As a Senior Gardener you will work hands‑on across the university’s extensive green estate, ensuring high‑quality grounds maintenance while developing your technical and leadership skills.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute seasonal planting, lawn care and border/shrub maintenance.
• Operate and maintain horticultural machinery safely.
• Lead project teams and support day‑to‑day operations.
• Mentor apprentices and develop colleagues’ skills.
• Implement landscaping schemes and specialist projects.

Required profile

• Proven experience in horticulture or groundskeeping, preferably in a large institutional setting.
• Ability to lead teams, manage projects and mentor junior staff.
• Strong commitment to health, safety and sustainable practices.
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

Required skills

• Machinery operation (e.g., mowers, tractors, power tools).
• Seasonal planting techniques.
• Lawn care and turf management.
• Border and shrub maintenance.
• Landscaping design and implementation.
