Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a leading product innovation consultancy on a 6‑month freelance contract. Based in London, you will work hybrid (minimum three days in‑office) delivering end‑to‑end mechanical solutions for medical and consumer products, at a day rate of £315.

Key responsibilities

• Lead client communication and manage project delivery from concept through to production.
• Interpret briefs, define requirements and control plans, budgets and timelines.
• Develop innovative engineering concepts and assess feasibility.
• Produce robust designs using 3D CAD, FEA/CFD, mathematical modelling and prototype testing.
• Support system‑level engineering across structures, mechanisms, thermo‑fluids and manufacturing.
• Create manufacturing specifications, detailed drawings and tolerance analyses.
• Ensure compliance with quality and regulatory standards.

Required profile

• Master's degree (1st or 2:1) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 5+ years of engineering project experience, preferably in a consultancy environment.
• Strong communication and stakeholder‑management abilities.

Required skills

• SolidWorks 3D CAD.
• FEA and CFD simulation.
• Tolerance calculations and analysis.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes: machining, moulding, fabrication, casting and assembly.
