Senior Mediation Officer

About the role

The Local Authority SEND service is seeking an experienced Senior Mediation Officer to lead complex mediation and dispute resolution work. You will manage a high‑risk caseload, represent the authority in SEND Tribunal proceedings, and work closely with families, schools and health partners to achieve child‑centred outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and oversee complex SEND mediation cases from initiation to resolution.
• Manage a sensitive caseload, ensuring statutory timescales and risk mitigation.
• Represent the Local Authority confidently at mediation meetings and SEND Tribunal hearings.
• Provide specialist advice on SEND legislation to colleagues and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with families, schools, health partners and multi‑agency teams to resolve disputes.
• Promote best practice and continuous improvement across mediation processes.

Required profile

• Extensive knowledge of SEND legislation, including the Children and Families Act 2014, SEND Code of Practice and Equality Act 2010.
• Proven experience managing complex SEND casework within a Local Authority or similar setting.
• Demonstrated experience in mediation, dispute resolution, advocacy or representing cases at SEND Tribunal.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
• Ability to prioritise competing demands in a fast‑paced environment.
• Experience building positive relationships with families, schools, health partners and multi‑agency teams.
