Senior Power Supplies Technician

About the role

Diamond Light Source is seeking a Senior Power Supplies Technician for a three‑year fixed‑term appointment at its Harwell site in Didcot. The role supports the reliable operation of existing accelerator power converters and the delivery of new power supply systems for the Diamond‑II upgrade.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair faults on circuit boards and electronic assemblies at component level.
• Build, modify and maintain test equipment, fixtures and associated hardware.
• Test circuit boards, modules, sub‑racks and complete power‑supply racks received from manufacturers or assembled in‑house.
• Support integration testing of power‑supply systems, including backplanes, controller interfaces, interlocks, cabling and rack‑level assemblies.
• Prepare materials, components and equipment for installation and commissioning activities.
• Supervise electrical wiring activities for new installations, ensuring safety and standards.
• Commission installed equipment and support handover into operation.
• Procure parts and services, liaising with suppliers and manufacturers as required.
• Participate in the 24‑hour on‑call rota, including shift and out‑of‑hours work for operations, shutdowns, installations or commissioning.
• Investigate beam trips and operational issues linked to power converters and drive continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Willingness to work on a 24‑hour on‑call rota and occasional shift or out‑of‑hours duties.
• Ability to work safely and to high standards in a laboratory/accelerator environment.
