Senior Practitioner – Children Looked After

About the role

The Senior Practitioner will join Luton Council’s Children Looked After team, delivering high‑level social work support to the most vulnerable children and families. You will manage a complex caseload, provide assessment and care management, and contribute to the professional development of the team.

Key responsibilities

• Carry a caseload of complex cases, delivering assessment, care management and other social work services.
• Maintain unallocated cases and ensure compliance with national and departmental policies.
• Provide practice management and supervision to team members under the Team Manager’s direction.
• Undertake research, training and development activities for the department and personal professional growth.
• Support skill development and knowledge acquisition for team members.
• Act as practice teacher for students on placement.
• Provide cover for the Team Manager during absences.
• Represent the department with external agencies on professional practice matters.
• Chair child protection strategy meetings when required.

Required profile

• Qualified social worker with extensive experience supporting vulnerable children and families.
• Proven ability to manage complex, high‑risk cases.
• Strong knowledge of national and local social work policies and quality standards.
• Experience in practice supervision, teaching and team development.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills, able to work under the direction of the Team Manager.
