Senior Social Worker – Children in Need

About the role

Our client, St. Helens MBC, is seeking a Senior Social Worker to join the Children in Need team. You will manage complex cases, safeguard children, and work closely with multi‑disciplinary professionals to improve outcomes for vulnerable young people.

Key responsibilities

• Hold and manage challenging cases, assessing and mitigating high levels of risk.
• Liaise with a wide range of professionals within multi‑disciplinary teams, including senior staff.
• Model best practice, set expectations, and mentor student social workers.
• Investigate allegations of neglect, ill‑treatment or abuse and initiate child protection procedures.
• Monitor and supervise children on Child Protection or Children in Need plans.
• Prepare reports, statements and legal documents for criminal and family courts and represent the department in court.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in social work, particularly with complex child protection cases.
• Strong knowledge of the Children Act 1989 and related legislation.
• Proven ability to assess risk, make decisions and balance support with control.
• Experience mentoring and coaching junior staff.
• Willingness to undergo an Enhanced DBS disclosure.
