Senior Underwriter - Casualty Treaty

About the role

We are partnering with a leading reinsurer in the City of London to recruit a Senior Underwriter for their growing Casualty Treaty team. The role involves underwriting international casualty treaty business, managing risk, and contributing to portfolio profitability.

Key responsibilities

• Underwrite casualty treaty reinsurance business within established authority levels, appetite and risk‑management frameworks.
• Contribute to portfolio management, business planning and strategic initiatives aimed at sustainable growth.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients and market counterparts.
• Analyse market conditions, industry trends and emerging risks to identify opportunities.
• Partner with actuarial and analytical teams to evaluate exposures, assess risk quality and support pricing decisions.
• Assist in the development and enhancement of pricing tools and underwriting methodologies.
• Ensure accurate maintenance of underwriting files, decisions, referrals and documentation in line with governance requirements.
• Produce portfolio performance reviews, analysing business written, missed opportunities and market dynamics.
• Support portfolio optimisation, reinsurance purchasing assessments and other risk‑management activities.
• Monitor casualty accumulations and exposure trends, maintaining effective controls and reporting.
• Collaborate with actuarial and risk teams to develop aggregation scenarios, stress tests and monitoring tools.
• Provide guidance and technical support to junior colleagues.
• Participate in research, market analysis and knowledge‑sharing initiatives.
• Escalate material underwriting, portfolio or market issues to senior stakeholders.
• Foster a collaborative team culture and drive continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Proven experience in technical casualty treaty underwriting.
• Strong broker contacts and market network.
• Track record of building and managing a profitable reinsurance portfolio.
• Solid understanding of risk‑management frameworks and underwriting appetite.
• Analytical mindset to assess market trends and emerging risks.
• Experience working closely with actuarial and analytical teams.
• Ability to mentor and develop junior underwriters.
