Service Manager – Environmental Operations (Days/Evenings/Nights)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Service Manager to lead our Environmental Operations team in Hackney. This senior position oversees a 24‑hour service delivering waste collection, street cleaning, graffiti removal and other essential public‑realm services across the borough.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, deliver and monitor a wide range of environmental services, including refuse and recycling collection, street and estate cleansing, graffiti removal, market cleaning and winter maintenance.
• Lead a workforce of up to 150 staff through supervisors and an Assistant Service Manager.
• Ensure compliance with health & safety standards, contractual obligations and service level agreements.
• Respond quickly to service failures, implement sustainable improvements and drive performance against KPIs.
• Manage budgets, resources and operational delivery to meet efficiency targets.
• Engage with residents, councillors and other stakeholders to resolve issues and enhance service quality.

Required profile

• Proven experience managing large teams in waste management, environmental services or a related sector.
• Track record of delivering high‑quality, customer‑focused services in a fast‑paced, high‑visibility environment.
• Strong leadership, people‑management and performance‑management capabilities.
• Experience handling budgets and driving operational efficiency.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Full UK driving licence (essential).
