Service Manager

About the role

The Service Manager will lead the strategic and operational delivery of a wide range of environmental services across East London. This full‑time, temporary position requires overseeing large‑scale street, waste and public‑realm operations while ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental standards.

Key responsibilities

• Manage street and estate cleansing, refuse and recycling collection, and commercial waste operations.
• Oversee graffiti removal, public‑realm maintenance, gulley cleansing and flood‑prevention activities.
• Coordinate market cleansing and winter maintenance services, including gritting and snow response.
• Supervise waste transfer station operations.
• Lead and motivate a workforce of up to 150 employees through supervisors and an assistant manager.
• Ensure service delivery meets performance standards, regulatory requirements and budgetary targets.
• Drive continuous improvement using KPIs, performance reporting and management information.
• Maintain full compliance with health, safety and environmental legislation.
• Investigate service failures and implement sustainable corrective actions.
• Build strong relationships with stakeholders, contractors, partner organisations and local businesses.

Required profile

• Proven experience managing large operational teams in an environmental or public‑services setting.
• Strong ability to meet performance, regulatory and budgetary objectives.
• Excellent stakeholder‑engagement and communication skills.
• Capability to drive continuous improvement and manage complex service portfolios.
