Shift Trading Manager

About the role

The Shift Trading Manager will lead the day‑to‑day operations of the GB trading desk, ensuring that all transactions are executed accurately, efficiently and in line with regulatory requirements. Reporting to the Trading Manager, this role provides operational leadership during shifts, manages workflow, monitors risk adherence and acts as the first point of escalation for trading issues.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee daily trading desk operations, guaranteeing accurate execution and compliance with strategies and risk frameworks.
• Direct the shift team to optimise portfolio dispatch across wholesale and balancing markets, focusing on technical and market risk.
• Lead and develop the shift trading team, providing guidance, monitoring performance and resolving operational challenges in real time.
• Ensure regulatory compliance, adherence to trading guidelines and internal processes throughout each shift.
• Support recruitment by conducting initial candidate assessments, assisting with onboarding and contributing to trader training.
• Monitor and report on team performance against operational KPIs, highlighting key risks and opportunities.
• Act as the first point of escalation for operational, market or system issues and coordinate effective resolution under pressure.
• Maintain proactive communication with the Trading Manager and Senior Traders to align on market strategy and emerging risks.

Required profile

• Solid understanding of short‑term GB power and gas market operations, including intraday and day‑ahead trading.
• Demonstrated track record in an energy trading environment, preferably with exposure to intraday or short‑term markets.
• Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to motivate shift‑based trading teams.
• Decisive under pressure, with excellent judgment in time‑sensitive, high‑stakes situations.
• Degree in a STEM, economics, mathematics, engineering, finance or related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
