Small Claims File Handler

About the role

We are seeking a Small Claims File Handler to join our legal team in Bolton. Working under the guidance of a lead File Handler, you will manage a portfolio of Small Claims Track cases, handling both liability and quantum matters and using telephone negotiation to achieve settlements.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of Small Claims Track files, planning workload to meet court deadlines.
• Analyse evidence and develop initial case strategies on liability and quantum.
• Conduct telephone negotiations with clients, defendants, insurers and solicitors to secure appropriate settlements and cost apportionments.
• Proof witnesses, assess evidence and draft witness statements.
• Prepare and file court documents, ensuring all deadlines are met.
• Instruct and liaise with counsel as required.
• Maintain accurate case, billing and management records in line with ISO 9001 and SRA standards.
• Handle correspondence and calls within agreed service level agreements.

Required profile

• Recent experience or education in law, preferably with exposure to file handling in a law practice or insurer.
• Understanding of the Highway Code and basic road traffic legislation.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads in a process‑driven environment.
• Positive attitude and willingness to develop professionally.
