Small Claims File Handler – Litigation Support

About the role

We are seeking a motivated Small Claims File Handler to join our legal team and manage a portfolio of Small Claims Track cases. Working under the guidance of a Lead File Handler, you will handle both quantum and liability matters, using telephone negotiation techniques to achieve appropriate settlements.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of Small Claims Track files, ensuring court deadlines are met.
• Analyse evidence to develop initial case strategies on liability and quantum.
• Conduct telephone negotiations with clients, defendants, insurers and solicitors to secure settlements and cost apportionment.
• Proof witnesses, assess evidence and draft statements.
• Prepare court documents and meet all filing deadlines.
• Instruct and liaise with counsel as required.
• Guide defendants through the litigation process and set expectations.
• Maintain accurate case, billing and management records in line with ISO 9001 and SRA standards.
• Delegate tasks to team members where appropriate and adhere to service level agreements.

Required profile

• Established experience or education in law.
• Previous file‑handling experience within a law practice or insurer.
• Good understanding of the Highway Code and basic road traffic legislation.
• Strong organisational and workload‑prioritisation abilities.
• Ability to work effectively in a process‑driven environment.
