Small Works Surveyor – Council Housing Services

About the role

Cheltenham Borough Council is seeking a Small Works Surveyor to manage a varied portfolio of small‑scale projects, property refurbishments and individual renovations within its housing stock. You will work within the Technical and Investment team to ensure repairs, improvements and adaptations are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out property inspections to identify defects, including major voids, disrepair cases and damp/mould assessments.
• Develop clear project scopes, obtain competitive quotations and manage projects typically up to £40k in value.
• Oversee contractors on site, monitor quality, programme and costs, and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and council policies.
• Maintain accurate property records and update asset information to support investment planning.
• Engage with residents, contractors and internal colleagues to resolve issues, minimise disruption and achieve positive outcomes.

Required profile

• Proactive and organised surveyor with a strong customer focus.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, able to work closely with residents, contractors and colleagues.
• Ability to manage projects from inception through to completion while adhering to statutory compliance.
• Attention to detail in maintaining accurate records and documentation.
