About the role

The Government Legal Department is seeking qualified solicitors, barristers or chartered legal executives to join a dynamic team delivering legal services across a wide range of public sector matters. You will work on high‑profile cases, advise ministers and senior officials, and contribute to legislation, litigation, commercial and employment law projects.

Key responsibilities

• Provide clear, risk‑based legal advice to government departments and ministers.
• Draft, review and negotiate contracts, policy documents and legislative proposals.
• Represent the department in litigation and dispute resolution matters.
• Collaborate with colleagues across advisory, litigation, commercial and employment teams.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant legislation, EU law and regulatory frameworks.

Required profile

• A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Strong analytical judgement and the ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to work collaboratively under pressure.
• Willingness to develop expertise across multiple legal areas.

Required skills

• Legal research and analysis.
