Special School Support Assistant (SEMH)

About the role

We are a warm, caring SEMH school in Chichester seeking Support Assistants who can bring patience, empathy and consistency to our team. You will work with pupils aged 7‑16 who have a range of social, emotional and mental health needs, as well as additional needs such as autism, ADHD, attachment disorders, anxiety and speech‑language delays.

Key responsibilities

• Provide gentle, personalised support to pupils with SEMH, autism, ADHD and related needs.
• Assist children experiencing emotional dysregulation, heightened anxiety, sensory overload or challenges with transitions and social interaction.
• Encourage engagement through creative, practical and therapeutic learning activities for both primary and secondary‑age pupils.
• Promote emotional wellbeing, safety and positive behaviour using calm, consistent and nurturing approaches.
• Help pupils develop communication skills, emotional regulation strategies, social understanding, independence and life‑skills.
• Build trusting relationships through warmth, patience and clear supportive communication.
• Collaborate closely with teachers, therapists, pastoral teams and external professionals to deliver holistic, child‑centred support.

Required profile

• Right to work in the UK.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
• Professional references covering the last 24 months.
• Level 2/3 qualification in childcare, education or health & social care, or relevant SEN/SEMH experience.
• Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle (driving essential due to school location).
