Special Support Assistant (SSA) – September Start

About the role

This position is for a Special Support Assistant (SSA) at a highly regarded special school in Maidenhead, starting in September. The school supports children and young people aged 2–19 with a wide range of additional needs, including autism, speech and language difficulties, and severe learning challenges. You will work closely with teachers, therapists and families to help pupils access learning and develop confidence.

Key responsibilities

• Support students within the classroom and throughout the school environment.
• Encourage independence, social development and positive behaviour.
• Assist with communication strategies and personalised learning activities.
• Provide emotional regulation support and help with physical needs where required.
• Collaborate with teachers, SEN professionals and families to tailor support.

Required profile

• Experience working with children or young people with special educational needs.
• Patient, resilient and empathetic with a strong commitment to inclusive education.
• Ability to build trusting relationships with pupils, staff and families.

Required skills

• Knowledge of autism spectrum conditions, speech, language and communication needs, and various learning difficulties.
• Understanding of positive behaviour management and emotional regulation techniques.
