Specialist Biomedical Scientist – Histology

About the role

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a proactive and enthusiastic Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join its Histopathology team. Working across both Royal Derby Hospital and Chesterfield Royal Hospital pathology services, you will contribute to a high‑quality, ISO‑15189 accredited service.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine histology tasks, including A‑C category tissue dissection.
• Prepare, process and analyse specimens using IHC, special stains and digital pathology platforms.
• Maintain microscopy quality control and troubleshoot technical issues.
• Participate in technical audits and ensure compliance with ISO 15189 standards.
• Supervise and support non‑state‑registered staff and assist in training associate practitioners and MLAs.
• Rotate as lead within the routine laboratory area when required.

Required profile

• Self‑motivated, proactive with strong organisational abilities.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with senior biomedical scientists and histopathologists.
• Willingness to engage in continuous professional development and audit activities.

Required skills

• Routine Histology and specimen dissection (A‑C).
• Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and special stains.
• Microscopy quality control.
• Experience with automated IHC machines.
• Familiarity with digital pathology and molecular techniques.
• Understanding of ISO 15189 standards and health & safety requirements.
