Sports Teaching Assistant (PE) – Secondary SEND School

About the role

We are seeking a motivated Sports Teaching Assistant to join a secondary special‑needs school in Charlton, Greenwich. You will work closely with the PE department to deliver inclusive physical‑education lessons for students aged 11‑19 who have severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorder, and complex medical needs.

Key responsibilities

• Support PE lessons for pupils with a wide range of additional needs.
• Assist in delivering adapted sports and physical‑activity programmes.
• Encourage participation, build confidence and promote physical wellbeing.
• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support during lessons and sporting events.
• Help with school sports events, enrichment activities and outdoor learning where appropriate.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists and support staff to ensure safe curriculum access.
• Offer personal‑care and mobility assistance when required, with training provided.

Required profile

• Previous experience supporting children or young people with Special Educational Needs in a school setting.
• GCSE Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above) or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.
• Either a recognised qualification/training in ASD support or a degree‑level qualification.

Required skills

• Ability to adapt sports activities for diverse learning and physical abilities.
• Basic understanding of health and safety procedures in a school environment.
• Effective communication with pupils, staff and external partners.
