Staff Nurse – Acute Care Unit (ACU)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Staff Nurse to join the Acute Care Unit (ACU) at Homerton University Hospital. The ACU is a fast‑paced 35‑bed ward that receives admissions directly from the Emergency Department across orthopaedics, medical and surgical specialties.

Key responsibilities

• Document patient details, care plans and evaluations using the EPR system.
• Deliver high‑quality nursing care and coordinate patient discharges with the discharge planning team.
• Communicate with patients, families and significant others, involving them in care decisions.
• Manage clinical emergencies and maintain up‑to‑date CPR certification.
• Use medical equipment safely, supervise its use and record vital signs, acting on any deterioration.
• Ensure evidence‑based practice for yourself and junior staff, maintain a personal learning portfolio.
• Liaise with the multidisciplinary team, support the sister/charge nurse and advocate for nursing input in clinical decisions.
• Participate in trust‑wide quality programmes and link‑nurse roles.

Required profile

• Qualified nurse with experience in acute care settings.
• Ability to work autonomously, manage a personal caseload and provide patient‑centred care.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to multidisciplinary teamwork.
• Commitment to continuous learning and supporting junior staff development.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the EPR (electronic patient record) system.
• Current CPR certification.
• Competence in using and supervising medical equipment.
• Accurate vital‑signs monitoring and interpretation.
