Staff Software Engineer - Back End

About the role

Capital One UK is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to shape the technical landscape of its back‑end services. You will drive innovation, influence multiple teams and help deliver solutions that meet real customer needs.

Key responsibilities

• Own and drive technical strategy for a major business outcome or technology domain across several teams.
• Lead coordination of multiple teams, ensuring alignment with business objectives and technology direction.
• Identify emerging patterns, define best practices and create reusable frameworks to boost engineering productivity.
• Build strong relationships with senior leadership, product owners and architects.
• Represent Capital One in external technical forums and vendor discussions.
• Guide service‑quality standards, complex incident resolution and proactive technical‑debt management.
• Mentor engineers and foster a culture of continuous learning.

Required profile

• Deep expertise in Java and system design for distributed architectures.
• Proven track record of leading technical initiatives across multiple teams.
• Strong experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
• Demonstrated ability to set multi‑team technical vision and influence without formal authority.
• Experience driving engineering standards, best practices and community of practice initiatives.
