Staff Software Engineer - Machine Learning

About the role

Capital One UK is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead its Machine Learning and AI initiatives across the UK. You will shape the technical strategy, drive innovation, and collaborate with multiple teams to deliver impactful AI solutions for customers and the business.

Key responsibilities

• Own and drive the ML/AI technical strategy for UK use cases, influencing enterprise AI adoption.
• Lead and coordinate ML engineering efforts across several teams, aligning with business objectives and platform capabilities.
• Provide technical consultancy on architecture, solution design, and use of enterprise ML/AI platforms.
• Identify emerging ML/AI patterns, evangelise best practices, and create reusable approaches.
• Establish MLOps standards, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, monitoring, and deployment.
• Collaborate with platform and data‑science teams to enhance capabilities and deliver use cases.
• Build strong relationships with senior leadership, product owners, and stakeholders.
• Represent Capital One in external ML/AI forums and contribute to industry discussions.
• Mentor engineers and promote a culture of continuous learning.

Required profile

• Deep expertise in Python and ML engineering.
• Proven experience designing ML/AI systems, MLOps, and cloud‑native architectures.
• Track record of leading technical ML/AI initiatives across multiple teams.
• Strong knowledge of responsible AI practices, including guardrails and hallucination mitigation.
