Stonemason – Church Heritage Projects

About the role

Our client, a respected heritage building contractor, is seeking an experienced Stonemason to join the Church Works Department. You will work on churches, cathedrals and listed structures across Essex and surrounding counties, shaping and restoring stone elements to preserve historic architecture.

Key responsibilities

• Cut, shape and dress natural stone using hand and power tools according to templates and design plans.
• Carve figures, lettering or patterns where required.
• Lay, replace and indent stone dressings on heritage façades.
• Prepare and apply lime mortars, repoint joints and rebuild masonry walls.
• Read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
• Maintain strict health and safety standards on site.

Required profile

• Proven track record in stone masonry, preferably on heritage or church projects.
• Ability to work methodically, accurately measuring dimensions.
• Strong eye for detail to ensure high‑quality finishes.
• Capability to work independently or as part of a team.
