Strategy & Operations Manager – Logistics (Physical Goods)

About the role

Outpost is building the infrastructure that lets any e‑commerce merchant sell physical goods globally, handling duties, taxes and customs. As Strategy & Operations Manager you will work directly with the CEO to scale the physical‑goods capability, solving hard problems around landed‑cost accuracy, HS classification, DDP/DAP routing and carrier orchestration.

Key responsibilities

• Design and maintain systems that calculate duties, tariffs and import taxes accurately at checkout.
• Develop HS classification frameworks for large SKU catalogs and ensure correct codes for merchant product data.
• Build routing logic that decides when to absorb duties (DDP) versus pass them through (DAP) based on margin, order value and destination.
• Manage relationships with carriers and brokers (DHL, FedEx, UPS, postal services) and oversee customs clearance to avoid delays.
• Implement duty‑drawback and VAT‑recovery processes for returns and high‑return categories.
• Onboard merchants from Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce, configuring checkout flows and integrating with fulfillment systems.

Required profile

• Deep knowledge of customs, duties, tariffs and import VAT, with experience handling clearance failures.
• Proven track record scaling HS classification and landed‑cost calculations for cross‑border platforms or logistics providers.
• Experience deciding DDP vs DAP strategies based on unit economics.
• Background in cross‑border e‑commerce, logistics or retail operating at scale.
• Comfort with ambiguity and a bias for action in a fast‑moving startup.
