Switchboard Operator – 24/7 Hospital Telephony

About the role

The Switchboard Operator provides a vital 24/7 telephony service for Peterborough City Hospital, handling incoming calls, emergency alerts and internal paging systems. You will join a supportive team that ensures smooth communication across the Trust.

Key responsibilities

• Answer and route incoming calls from patients, staff and the public.
• Respond immediately to emergency and resuscitation calls.
• Monitor and acknowledge all alarm systems in the switchboard room.
• Operate screen‑based consoles, paging terminals and emergency telephones.
• Record unusual occurrences, complaints or equipment failures in the occurrence log.
• Cover night shifts independently and adapt to short‑notice duty changes.

Required profile

• Excellent telephone etiquette and communication skills.
• Ability to remain calm and diplomatic under pressure.
• Strong organisational and interpersonal abilities.
• Flexibility to work nights, weekends and public holidays.
