Teacher of Deaf (Primary School)

About the role
This permanent, four‑day‑a‑week position supports a primary school in Crawley by delivering specialised teaching for deaf pupils. You will work within a mainstream setting, helping children achieve full academic and social inclusion.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, deliver and assess personalised learning programmes, including Deaf Studies and British Sign Language where appropriate.
- Monitor pupil progress in hearing and language development, keeping accurate records.
- Collaborate with mainstream teachers to differentiate learning and improve accessibility.
- Develop, implement and review individual learning plans.
- Work alongside Speech and Language Therapists, Audiologists and other external professionals.
- Ensure pupils receive appropriate audiological support.
- Promote communication strategies in line with hearing‑impairment policies.
- Contribute to staff development through deaf‑awareness training.
- Liaise with parents, carers and external agencies to provide coordinated support.
Required profile
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
- Experience working with, or a strong interest in, deaf children.
- Willingness to obtain a mandatory qualification for teaching deaf pupils.
- Strong understanding of inclusive education and SEND provision.
- Excellent communication, collaboration and organisational abilities.
- Confidence working within a multidisciplinary team.
Required skills
- Knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL) – desirable but not essential.
- Understanding of inclusive education practices and SEND frameworks.
