Teaching Assistant – Aspiring Speech & Language Therapist

About the role
This position is a full‑time teaching assistant role within a mainstream secondary school in Merton, supporting the Speech, Communication and Language provision. It is designed for recent graduates who wish to gain practical experience before pursuing a Masters or PhD in Speech and Language Therapy or related fields.
Key responsibilities
- Assist specialist teachers, therapists and psychologists in delivering interventions such as Lego Therapy, Zones of Regulation and targeted speech and language activities.
- Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support to pupils across Key Stages 3‑5, both inside and outside the classroom.
- Help plan, prepare and implement resources for pupils with speech, communication, social, autism and other related needs.
- Monitor progress, record observations and contribute to individual education plans.
- Participate in regular training sessions and team meetings to develop professional knowledge.
Required profile
- Graduate (1st class or 2:1) from a recognised university – subject not limited.
- Strong A‑Levels and GCSEs, including English at GCSE.
- Previous experience supporting children or young people (e.g., tutoring, volunteering, nannying).
- Genuine passion for helping learners with barriers to education.
- Warm, inquisitive personality with the ability to communicate calmly and confidently.
