Teaching Assistant – SEN Unit (Special Educational Needs)

About the role

We are looking for a compassionate Teaching Assistant to join the SEN unit of a well‑established primary school. The role focuses on supporting pupils with significant social communication differences, such as autism, and offers the chance to make a real difference in their daily learning experience.

Key responsibilities

• Provide tailored, one‑to‑one and group support to pupils under the guidance of the SEN coordinator and classroom teachers.
• Assist in developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for each student.
• Facilitate social‑skills activities in both structured and naturalistic settings.
• Use a variety of communication aids and strategies to enhance interaction and learning.
• Monitor emotional and behavioural needs, offering immediate assistance and feedback.
• Collaborate with teachers, parents, and external professionals to promote student progress.
• Maintain accurate records of progress and incidents, reporting as required.

Required profile

• Experience working with children, preferably in an SEN environment.
• Understanding of challenges faced by pupils with social communication differences.
• Patience, resilience and a compassionate approach.
• Strong communication abilities, especially with communication aids.
• Team‑player who can follow guidance from an SEN coordinator.
