Trading Standards Enforcement Officer

About the role

The Trading Standards team at Birmingham City Council is seeking a dedicated Enforcement Officer to protect consumers and curb illegal trading activity. You will join a seasoned group of 18 officers, working in a supportive environment that balances investigative work with operational enforcement.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct inspections, raids and other enforcement operations across the city.
• Gather, bag, tag and store evidence in line with legal standards.
• Prepare case files, witness statements and court documentation.
• Attend legal proceedings and support prosecutions as required.
• Collaborate with wider criminal enforcement teams and respond to incidents outside standard office hours.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a criminal enforcement or regulatory setting, preferably Trading Standards.
• Proven ability to support investigations, handle evidence and produce court‑ready documentation.
• Strong organisational and communication skills, with a methodical approach to challenging situations.
• Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.

Required skills

• Evidence handling and chain‑of‑custody procedures.
• Preparation of legal and investigative documentation.
• Knowledge of consumer protection legislation.
