Trainee Archaeologist – Andover

About the role

We are looking for a motivated Trainee Archaeologist to join our Andover team on a six‑month fixed‑term contract. The role involves supporting fieldwork projects such as surveys, evaluations and excavations, and gaining core archaeological skills.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the safe conduct of fieldwork projects, including surveys, surface collection, evaluations and excavations.
• Compile archaeological site records using pro‑forma sheets and registers.
• Process artefacts and environmental samples as required.
• Carry out manual excavation of features using hand tools.

Required profile

• Broad knowledge of archaeological periods and practices, gained through a degree‑level qualification or equivalent experience.
• Ability to work physically demanding outdoor tasks in varied weather conditions.
• Willingness to undertake away work and stay in provided accommodation.
• Good attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.

Required skills

• Excavation techniques and stratigraphic recording.
• Artefact and environmental sample processing.
• Drawing, photography and sampling methods.
• Use of manual excavation tools.
