Trainee Cyber Security Engineer (Security Trainee)

About the role

The Cyber Operations team at NHS England is looking for a motivated Trainee Cyber Security Engineer to join the Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC). Working under senior guidance, you will help keep core security platforms running smoothly and contribute to the NHS’s overall cyber resilience.

Key responsibilities

• Support day‑to‑day operation of CSOC platforms, monitoring health, managing data ingestion and maintaining detections.
• Assist with incident handling, providing technical input for investigation, containment and recovery.
• Help diagnose and resolve service incidents related to security tooling such as SIEM, XDR and logging pipelines.
• Participate in approved changes through formal change‑management processes, ensuring safe implementation and documentation.
• Contribute to routine service activities, including system checks, access management, user support and upkeep of runbooks and SOPs.

Required profile

• Enthusiasm for cyber security and a willingness to learn on the job.
• Basic understanding of security concepts and network fundamentals.
• Ability to follow structured processes and work collaboratively with senior engineers.

Required skills

• Familiarity with SIEM platforms.
• Experience or knowledge of XDR technologies.
• Understanding of identity and access management concepts.
