Trainee Outdoor Education Teacher / Sports Coach

About the role

This is a paid trainee position for an unqualified Outdoor Education Teacher and Sports Coach in Burnley, Lancashire. You will work directly with young people, delivering sports, fitness and outdoor adventure sessions while progressing towards full teacher qualification.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging sports sessions, team‑building activities and outdoor trips across East Lancashire.
• Act as a positive role model, establishing clear behavioural boundaries and a supportive learning environment.
• Drive the school minibus to transport pupils to outdoor locations.
• Collaborate with mentors and senior staff to develop lesson plans and assessment strategies.
• Participate in professional development and teacher‑training pathways.

Required profile

• Experience leading or coaching youth in sports, outdoor activities, or community programmes.
• Strong resilience, “thick skin” and a trauma‑informed approach to supporting vulnerable pupils.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to drive a minibus.
• Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check.

Required skills

• Full UK driving licence (essential).
• Ability to set clear behavioural boundaries.
• Basic understanding of outdoor safety and risk management.
