Trainee Train Conductor – Full‑time in Manchester

About the role

As a Trainee Train Conductor you will be the front‑line representative of the railway service, ensuring safe and efficient train operations while delivering high‑quality customer care. The role is based in Manchester and involves a full‑time, rotating shift pattern that includes evenings, nights and weekends.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect and operate train equipment, doors and control systems.
• Greet passengers, check tickets and travel cards, and provide route information.
• Make clear announcements via the onboard public‑address system.
• Assist passengers during boarding and alighting, ensuring safety at all times.
• Manage delays, disruptions and emergencies, including leading evacuations if required.
• Coordinate with drivers and operational teams to keep the service on schedule.
• Collect fares, validate tickets and address fare evasion.
• Maintain accurate records of passenger counts, ticket sales and incident reports.

Required profile

• Strong customer‑service orientation and ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Willingness to work a rotating shift pattern, including nights and weekends.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
• Commitment to safety standards and willingness to undergo comprehensive training.

Required skills

• Operation of ticket validation equipment.
• Use of onboard public‑address (PA) systems.
