Transfer Station Manager, Smugglers Way

About the role

The Transfer Station Manager will lead the safe, compliant and efficient operation of the Smugglers Way Transfer Station in London. Reporting to senior management, you will be responsible for site performance, environmental compliance, health & safety and team development.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, motivate and develop supervisors, operators and support staff, fostering a safety‑first culture.
• Oversee day‑to‑day station operations, ensuring waste is received, stored, processed and transferred in line with permits and contracts.
• Maintain full compliance with health & safety legislation, environmental permits and company standards, conducting risk assessments and investigations.
• Manage plant and equipment maintenance programmes, defect reporting and capital investment projects.
• Monitor operational performance against KPIs, support budget control and identify efficiency improvements.
• Build and maintain relationships with clients, contractors, regulators and local authorities.

Required profile

• Proven managerial experience in waste management, recycling, logistics or a similar operational environment.
• Strong leadership and people‑management skills with a track record of developing high‑performing teams.
• Solid understanding of health & safety legislation, environmental permits and incident investigation.
• Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced, safety‑critical setting.

Required skills

• Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience with operational reporting tools and data analysis.
