Transport Shift Manager

About the role

We are seeking a Transport Shift Manager to lead our day‑to‑day transport operations for a leading UK food distribution business. The role ensures operational targets are met safely, efficiently and cost‑effectively while supporting a high‑performing team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, motivate and develop the transport operational team, ensuring compliance with legislation, SOPs and customer commitments.
• Plan and manage workforce, rosters, absence and overtime to optimise efficiency.
• Monitor and control operational costs, supporting budget adherence.
• Adjust staffing levels to meet fluctuating demand and conduct regular performance reviews.
• Oversee transport‑related purchasing, processing purchase requests and orders promptly.
• Investigate vehicle and workplace incidents, produce root‑cause reports and implement corrective actions.
• Act as the primary point of contact for the team, fostering engagement and resolving delivery issues.
• Maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and customers and promote health & safety compliance.

Required profile

• Previous experience in transport, logistics or distribution environments.
• Strong knowledge of UK transport legislation, Working Time Directive, Drivers’ Hours Regulations and tachograph rules.
• Proven ability to manage and develop operational teams.
• Excellent organisational, planning and problem‑solving skills.
