Welder – Shipbuilding (Type 26 Frigate)

About the role

BAE Systems is seeking an experienced welder to join its shipbuilding team in Glasgow (Govan and Scotstoun). You will work on the construction of the Type 26 frigates, delivering high‑quality welds in a fast‑paced, safety‑focused environment.

Key responsibilities

• Weld carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium using MMA, MAG, MIG, FCAW, Submerged Arc and BUG‑O processes.
• Produce butt and fillet welds, including ceramic‑tile welding within FCAW/MAG applications.
• Self‑verify all welds to ensure compliance with visual and NDE standards.
• Follow SHE requirements, apply effective fume‑control measures and maintain safe working practices.

Required profile

• Modern Apprenticeship certificate (Trade Papers) and relevant mechanical qualifications (SVQ3, City & Guilds or equivalent).
• Proven experience with ceramic‑tile welding, Flux‑Cored Arc Welding and Metal‑Cored Arc Welding.
• Ability to weld carbon‑steel sections 4–15 mm thick and meet visual/NDE examination criteria.
• Strong understanding of SHE risk‑assessment principles.
• Background in maritime, construction, manufacturing or similar environments, including MIG aluminium welding and automated welding systems.
