Workshop Manager - Steel Fabrication

About the role
Our client, a leading construction and main‑contracting firm, is expanding its structural steel capability and needs an experienced Workshop Manager to lead the steel fabrication workshop. You will be responsible for day‑to‑day production, quality, safety and timely delivery of fabricated steel components.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee all operations within the steel fabrication workshop, managing a team of 8‑10 welders, fabricators and operatives.
- Plan and coordinate production schedules to meet project deadlines.
- Review and interpret fabrication drawings, specifications and project requirements.
- Ensure all work complies with quality standards, health & safety regulations and company procedures.
- Monitor productivity, labour allocation and material usage, and report performance.
- Liaise with project managers, engineers, procurement and site teams to resolve issues.
- Maintain equipment, oversee safe operation of machinery and manage maintenance schedules.
- Support staff development through training, performance management and mentorship.
Required profile
- Proven experience in structural steel or steel fabrication, preferably in a supervisory or managerial role.
- Strong understanding of fabrication processes, welding techniques and structural steelwork.
- Ability to read and interpret technical and engineering drawings.
- Excellent leadership, communication and organisational abilities.
- Commercial awareness and knowledge of health & safety best practice in a workshop environment.
- Relevant qualifications such as NVQ/HNC/HND in Fabrication, Welding or Engineering, SSSTS/SMSTS and a valid CSCS card.
