Year 1 Teaching Assistant – SEND Support (Maternity Cover)

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 class during a maternity cover period. The role is based in Warton, Preston, and focuses on delivering personalised support to two SEND pupils while assisting the whole class transition from EYFS to structured learning.

Key responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small‑group support for a pupil with ASD, maintaining focus and engagement.
• Deliver speech and language interventions for a pupil with global developmental delay and SaLT needs.
• Support the class teacher in managing the transition of 21 pupils from EYFS to Year 1.
• Assist with outdoor and Forest School activities, encouraging nature‑based learning.
• Work with the SENDCo to monitor, record and report progress of the SEND pupils.
• Help maintain a safe, inclusive classroom environment.

Required profile

• Minimum Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent Early Years qualification.
• Experience or strong interest in supporting children with SEND, particularly ASD and speech‑language needs.
• Ability to work flexibly within term‑time hours (08:30‑15:30, Monday‑Friday).
• Good communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with teachers and specialists.
• Commitment to the school’s inclusive ethos and outdoor learning approach.
