Youth Engagement Mentor – Hartlepool

About the role

The Youth Engagement Mentor works directly with young people who are persistently absent or excluded from school, helping them rebuild confidence and re‑enter education or vocational pathways. This part‑time, flexible position is based in Hartlepool and its surrounding areas.

Key responsibilities

• Build trusting relationships by meeting students in their own environments, often at their homes.
• Deliver one‑to‑one sessions focused on confidence, emotional regulation and self‑esteem.
• Facilitate low‑pressure, interest‑based learning activities to rekindle a love of learning.
• Accompany students to interviews, placements or other appointments, teaching practical life skills such as budgeting and using public transport.
• Represent the young person in multi‑agency meetings with Social Care, CAMHS and other partners.
• Support families in creating home environments that encourage attendance and growth.

Required profile

• Resilient, compassionate and able to work with young people facing complex barriers.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Ability to work independently and adapt to changing circumstances.
• Commitment to a trauma‑informed, student‑centred approach.

Required skills

• Strong interpersonal and listening skills.
• Experience delivering one‑to‑one support or mentorship.
• Knowledge of safeguarding and child‑protection principles.
