1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant – Year 1 (Primary)

About the role

We are looking for a caring and enthusiastic 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil with Down syndrome in a welcoming primary school in South Croydon. The role starts in September 2026 and runs until July 2027 on a full‑time, long‑term contract.

Key responsibilities

• Provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day.
• Assist the pupil in accessing classroom learning using adapted resources.
• Encourage communication, confidence and independence.
• Work closely with the class teacher, SENDCO and external professionals to implement the support plan.
• Support the pupil during transitions, breaktimes and wider school activities.
• Provide personal care when required, maintaining dignity and wellbeing.

Required profile

• Kind, reliable and passionate about supporting children with additional needs.
• Calm, patient and nurturing approach.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to use initiative and adapt to the child’s individual needs.

Required skills

• Willingness to learn and use British Sign Language (BSL) – prior knowledge not essential.
