Academic Tutor – 1:1 Support for Vulnerable Students

About the role

We are looking for qualified teachers or subject specialists to deliver one‑to‑one tuition for looked‑after children and young people in crisis care across Essex. The role focuses on building confidence, closing learning gaps in English, Maths and Science, and supporting emotional wellbeing.

Key responsibilities

• Provide tailored 1:1 tuition for pupils from KS1 to KS4 in core subjects.
• Create a safe, supportive learning environment where students feel valued.
• Assess progress regularly and adapt lessons to meet academic and emotional needs.
• Work collaboratively with foster carers, residential staff and local authorities to ensure holistic support.

Required profile

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) or a degree‑level qualification in a core subject.
• Experience teaching or tutoring, preferably with children who have gaps in their education.
• Patient, empathetic and resilient attitude.
• Enhanced DBS check on the update service or willingness to obtain one.
