Access Engineer

About the role
The UK Telecoms Lab (UKTL) is seeking an Access Engineer to strengthen the security, interoperability and resilience of the UK telecoms ecosystem. You will work across fixed and mobile access technologies, supporting integration, testing and validation of devices under test (DUTs) and related systems.
Key responsibilities
- Review supplier designs and manage integration, acceptance, testing, maintenance and operation of DUTs.
- Build, integrate and support access DUTs, including RF systems and test environments.
- Assist with Radio Access Network (RAN) installation and ensure user equipment readiness.
- Develop, document and execute test cases and strategies, clearly defining scope and impact.
- Record, analyse and report test results, providing insights for security, standards and policy.
- Diagnose and resolve connectivity, hardware and software issues in test labs.
- Perform regular RF sweeps, monitor safety thresholds and escalate as needed.
- Provision and manage SIM configurations across multiple core network identities.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure comprehensive interoperability testing.
- Represent UKTL at industry and standards events, promoting secure‑by‑design principles.
- Support continuous improvement of processes aligned with UKTL’s security posture.
Required profile
- Strong knowledge of 4G/5G radio technologies, SIMs, user equipment and fixed access systems (NTN experience a plus).
- Experience with Kubernetes container environments and OpenStack‑based hypervisors.
- Proficiency with test tools, administration and troubleshooting.
- Hands‑on functional testing, analysis and reporting experience.
- Experience working in Agile environments with sprint planning and delivery tracking.
- Ability to commute to Birmingham office at least twice a week.
