Accounts and Tax Manager

About the role

Our client, a well‑established professional services firm in Barnstaple, is seeking an experienced Accounts & Tax Manager. The senior role will manage a diverse portfolio of clients, oversee the preparation of year‑end accounts and tax returns, and lead a small team to ensure high‑quality service and profitability.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of sole traders, partnerships, charities and limited companies, delivering timely accounts and tax work.
• Prepare, review and approve year‑end accounts in line with relevant accounting standards.
• Prepare, review and sign off tax computations and returns.
• Develop and maintain strong client relationships, attending meetings and providing advisory support.
• Allocate work, monitor deadlines and resource requirements across the team.
• Supervise, mentor and review the output of junior staff, supporting their development.
• Stay up‑to‑date with tax legislation changes and disseminate knowledge internally.

Required profile

• ACA or ACCA qualified with solid general practice experience.
• Proven ability to manage client portfolios and lead small teams.
• Strong technical knowledge of accounting standards and tax compliance.
• Excellent communication, client‑focused approach and high attention to detail.
• Highly organised, proactive and able to handle a varied workload.

Required skills

• Proficiency with cloud accounting platforms.
• Experience using modern accounting systems.
