Archaeologist – Fieldwork (Kemble)

About the role

Cotswold Archaeology is seeking skilled archaeologists to join its fieldwork team based in Kemble. The role involves manual excavation, recording and analysis of archaeological data on a variety of commercial projects across England and Wales.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the delivery of fieldwork projects, including fieldwalking, evaluation, excavation, finds processing, data entry and archiving.
• Accurately record investigation data using pro‑formae sheets, scale drawings and photographs in line with company procedures.
• Recover artefacts and environmental samples according to recognised industry standards.
• Carry out manual excavation of features efficiently using a range of tools.
• Maintain well‑organised administrative records and support the training of trainee archaeologists.
• Engage courteously with sponsors, clients, public officials and members of the public.

Required profile

• Solid knowledge of archaeological practice and commercial archaeology experience.
• Ability to work to deadlines, maintain accurate records and undertake away work when required.
• Strong interpersonal skills for dealing with clients, stakeholders and the public.

Required skills

• Manual excavation and stratigraphic recording.
• Creation of stratigraphic matrices, measured drawings and photographic documentation.
• GPS surveying (Leica GPS/TST) and basic surveying skills.
• Full manual driving licence (desirable).
• CSCS/EUSR card or ability to pass the CITB HS&E Operatives Test.
