Assistant Accountant - Excellent Development Opportunity

About the role

We are seeking an Assistant Accountant to join a purpose‑led organisation in Edinburgh. This is a development‑focused position for someone with a solid finance foundation who wants broader exposure to month‑end processes, financial control and technical accounting.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and post month‑end journals, including accruals and pre‑payments.
• Produce accurate balance‑sheet reconciliations and investigate system discrepancies.
• Support the delivery of a timely trial balance and financial reporting.
• Assist the Finance Manager with VAT and Gift Aid accounting and compliance.
• Take ownership of statutory accounts working papers, schedules and supporting documentation.
• Respond to external audit requests and provide required evidence.
• Contribute to finance projects, process improvements and continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Experience working within a finance or accounting environment.
• Ability to go beyond purely transactional processing, handling journals, accruals, pre‑payments and reconciliations.
• Strong analytical mindset and attention to detail.
• Willingness to develop technical accounting knowledge and take on increasing responsibility.

Required skills

• Knowledge of VAT and Gift Aid accounting.
• Familiarity with FRS 102 and Charity SORP reporting standards.
