Assistant Engineer (Electrical Services)

About the role

Reporting to the Street Lighting Manager, you will join a multidisciplinary team delivering exterior lighting and electrical design solutions across trunk roads, housing estates, public realms, decorative features and EV charger installations. The role blends office work, home‑working and on‑site surveys to ensure designs meet client needs and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare reports, feasibility studies, designs, drawings, specifications and contract documents.
• Conduct site surveys and inspections to inform design work.
• Liaise with engineers, technicians, clients, electricity suppliers, contractors and sub‑consultants.
• Assist in cost estimating and preparation of business cases.
• Design lighting projects in line with relevant standards and codes of practice.
• Produce electrical designs for private cable networks.
• Support Environmental Lighting Impact Assessments, Economic Assessments and night‑time lighting assessments.

Required profile

• Relevant engineering degree or equivalent practical experience.
• Completed or progressing towards the Institution of Lighting Professional Exterior Lighting Diploma.
• Registered with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer and member of the ILP.
• Strong motivation, ability to work with limited supervision and build positive relationships.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Required skills

• Lighting Reality software.
• AutoCAD.
• Knowledge of DMRB and MCHDW standards.
• Familiarity with BS5489, BS EN 13201 and BS 7671.
• Electrical design for public lighting.
