Assistant Headteacher – Complex Needs School

About the role

The school is a specialist complex‑needs setting in South Birmingham, supporting pupils with autism, severe learning difficulties and physical disabilities. As Assistant Headteacher you will join the senior leadership team to help shape strategic direction and ensure outstanding outcomes for every learner.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Headteacher in strategic planning and day‑to‑day school management.
• Drive improvements in teaching, learning and assessment across all phases.
• Lead, develop and mentor teams of teachers, support staff and therapists.
• Monitor pupil progress and ensure high‑quality personalised outcomes.
• Promote a culture of inclusion, safeguarding and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with families, external agencies and multidisciplinary teams.
• Contribute to curriculum development and whole‑school self‑evaluation.

Required profile

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
• Significant experience in a SEND or complex‑needs environment.
• Proven leadership experience as an Assistant Headteacher, SENCO, Phase Leader or equivalent.
• Strong understanding of autism, severe learning difficulties and specialist provision.
• Excellent communication, organisational and leadership abilities.
