Assistant Management Accountant

About the role

We are seeking an Assistant Management Accountant to join the finance team of a well‑established organisation in Bishop’s Stortford. The role offers a varied, hands‑on experience across management accounts, transactional finance, payroll, systems and financial controls, ideal for someone looking to develop technical accounting skills in a fast‑paced environment.

Key responsibilities

• Support preparation of monthly management accounts and validate financial data.
• Assist month‑end close activities including journals, accruals, pre‑payments and ledger maintenance.
• Perform reconciliations of sales ledger, purchase ledger and bank accounts.
• Process accounts payable – invoice handling, payment runs and supplier queries.
• Enter data and run monthly payroll, reconciling payroll control accounts.
• Ensure compliance with PAYE, NIC, pensions auto‑enrolment and HMRC reporting.
• Prepare and submit VAT returns with correct tax treatment.
• Provide transactional data for financial reporting and management information packs.
• Monitor cash flow and support ad‑hoc financial analysis.
• Contribute to finance system improvements and automation initiatives.

Required profile

• Experience in a finance or assistant accountant role.
• Working towards AAT, ACCA or CIMA qualification.
• Strong understanding of transactional finance and month‑end processes.
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational abilities.
• Ability to communicate effectively with finance and non‑finance stakeholders.
